Anime is a French word adopted by the Japanese that translates to "animation" and is used by them in reference to any form of animation, be it traditional hand-drawn cell animation, stop-motion animation, or the latest CGI techniques. In fandom outside of Japan it is usually used to refer to the distinct style of hand drawn animation produced in Japan.
