Season Ten (1984-1985) of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 6, 1984.

By the end of season nine, five cast members either left the series or were fired leaving a large void in the show. The space was filled by some of the best known SNL cast members of the era, including Billy Crystal, Martin Short and Christopher Guest.

In addition to cast members, producer Dick Ebersol also hired new writers like Larry David, who quit the show mid-season, only to return days later as if nothing had happened. David would later use this life experience as the plot of an episode of Seinfeld. David left at the end of the season, only one sketch he wrote appeared on the show, in the last 5 minutes of an episode where "weaker" sketches are typically buried.

One episode in the season, slated to be hosted by John Candy and Eugene Levy then of SCTV, was cancelled due to the 1985 Writers Strike. The episode was advertised on the SNL Film Festival special for March 9, 1985.
