Quantum Leap is a science fiction series created by Donald Bellisario that stared Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a scientist whose experiment in time travel went "a little ca-ca." This led to him being trapped in the past. Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.
The basic arc of the story was that in each episode, Sam would leap in to a new person who lived at some point during his own lifetime. His purpose seems to be guided by an unknown power (cryptically shown in the last episode), but he can only leap once he has corrected a past wrong.
Sam is guided on his journeys by his close companion Al (played by Dean Stockwell), who appears to Sam as a holographic projection from the future. Whilst Al cannot interact with any matter, he is visible by those with certain types of alpha brainwave patterns: young children, animals and occasionally people with unusual brainwave patterns such as the mentally ill.
Sam physically leaps through time, his body replacing those he visits, but their aura surrounds him so that he appears to everybody (except Al) as those who he occupies. On occasion we are shown the people he leaped into in the 'Waiting Room' back in the future, Sam's real time.
Although the series was based around science-fiction, the main focus of the show was the characters and Sam's effect on their lives. For most of the five seasons these were ordinary people whose lives were changed in some way for the better, although the series did on occasion step in to "real" history, in particular the Lee Harvey Oswald double episode of season five.
