Season Six of Pokémon premiered on November 21, 2002. It is the first of three seasons adapting the Nintendo Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. In Japan, this season is actually considered the first season of a new series titled Pokémon Advanced Generation. The title refers to a number of things, namely the introduction of over 100 new Pokémon, as well as new locations, characters, and plotlines. In English this season is given the name Pokémon Advanced. May and Max are added to the main roster of characters, while Team Magma and Team Aqua are introduced as villains. Pokémon that make their debut include Torchic, Treecko, and Mudkip.

The season once more follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum, who has now traveled to the region of Hoenn to compete in their Pokémon League. He leaves all of his Pokémon at home save Pikachu, leaving him free to capture previously unseen Pokémon. He is joined by new Trainer May, who decides to compete her Pokémon in Pokémon Contests, where they are judged on the style and beauty of their attacks rather than mere strength.
