Season One of Pokémon premiered on April 1, 1997. The season is a loose adaptation of the original Pokémon games for the Nintendo Game Boy, Pokémon Red and Green (or Pokémon Red and Blue outside of Japan). The season introduces main character Ash Ketchum, his friends Misty and Brock, as well as Pokémon like Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Togepi. The season has no special name, though Cartoon Network promotions for reruns of the season advertised it as the "Indigo League" (referring to the story arc). In the USA, this batch of episodes is split between seasons 1 and 2, season 1 ending with The Breeding Center Secret (episode 55). Several episodes were also skipped over in the US release, most notably Electric Soldier Porygon, the infamous "seizure" episode.

Season one follows Ash Ketchum as he catches his first handful of Pokémon, and travels around the region of Kanto collecting badges to complete in the Indigo League Championship.
