- Jon Lovitz had long been a friend of Phil Hartman. His choice as a replacement for the late Hartman mirrors the plot of the episode. Lovitz was an unusual choice, having already played two different characters as a guest actor on the series (as a mental patient in Our Fiftieth Episode and a suicidal man in Jumper).
