MTV2 (originally known as just M2 until 2000) first started broadcasting on August 1, 1996 as part of MTV Networks. At its conception it showed a selection of lesser-known rock bands, eschewing the pop music and mainsteam alternative music that made up the primary content of its elder sibling. As MTV has made the transition away from showing music videos altogether, bigger acts have been finding their way to MTV2. They also have a heavy rotation of hip-hop music, mostly notably on their Sucker Free Sundays block.

In recent years MTV2 has also begin to show some reality and comedic programming.
