Kim Delaney was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While in high school, she began a modeling career. She signed with Elite Model Management. After graduating, she moved to New York City to study acting with William Esper and got her first role in All My Children as Jenny Gardner in 1981. She stayed on the show until 1984 when she decided to leave to pursue feature films.

Delaney has since had regular roles in the series Tour of Duty, NYPD Blue, a lead role in Philly, and CSI: Miami. In 2004, she starred in the NBC miniseries 10.5 and its sequel, 10.5: Apocalypse, in 2006. In 2005, she began a five episode arc on The O.C. as Rebecca Bloom. In 2006, she starred with Steven Weber in an episode of Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King.

She was nominated three times for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress on NYPD Blue, and won in 1997.

She appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in early 2007 as a guest-star on the episodes Philadelphia and Florida. She played the character Captain Julia Millfield.

She currently plays the character Claudia Joy Holden on Lifetime TV's Army Wives.

Won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for playing Det. Diane Russell on NYPD Blue in 1997.
