Josie and the Pussycats is an animated comedy that aired on CBS.
Josie began as a character from Archie Comics (under the Radio Comics copyright), which basically entailed the same motif as Archie: a comedy of teen romance with Josie, with her pals Valerie, Melody (a sweet airhead whose dialogue balloons are dotted with musical notes) and boyfriend Alan. Coveting Josie's affections is rich boy Alexander Cabot III and her vainglorious sister Alexandra (who covets Alan). Just prior to the cartoon's premiere, the rock band slant was added and for some reason Alexandra was made a sorceress.
The cartoon has the band usually on their way to a gig, only to get caught up a clandestine adventure, squaring off against a megalomaniac who seeks to get rich or rule the world. Alexandra's attempts to steal Alan from Josie are usually foiled by her own eager ineptitude or by her wise-guy cat Sebastian. Alexander was given more hair and serves as the band's road manager, although through Casey Kasem's voice he comes across as a clone of Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
It has been listed elsewhere that the show's first episode was "The Nemo's A No-No Affair." This was the first episode produced. The first to be televised, on September 12, 1970, was "A Greenthumb Is Not A Goldfinger."
This show ran two years on CBS. The 1970-71 season had Josie and the Pussycats hosting CBS' interstitial feature In the Know, which aired seven times following specific programs. In 1972 it was retooled as Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space (the group sent into space in a rocket accidentally). It ran to February 1974 and was replaced by the original series. Josie and the Pussycats returned in 1975 on NBC, played in repeats.
