Home Movies, originally created for UPN, found itself cancelled in five episodes, only to be brought back two years later for new viewers on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. Though never gaining a mass audience, it did gain a cult fanbase of people who got the show and enjoyed its subtle and dry humor. Its original run on UPN lasted a bit over a month, but on Adult Swim it found life for 47 more episodes over three years, until it was cancelled after the fourth season due to weak ratings and Cartoon Network's 52-episode rule (in which mediocre performing programs are given 52 episodes and then cancelled).
The show centers around eight-year-old Brendon Small. Brendon lives with his divorced mother, Paula, and makes movies with his two friends, Jason and Melissa. Brendon finds an unusual father-figure in his school soccer coach, Jon McGuirk, who hates children and hates soccer.
Home Movies uses a technique called retroscripting, in which the dialogue between characters is given a slight outline, and improvised. Because of this, the show has a character-driven dialogue humor to it, which makes or breaks the show.
