Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law — Season Two

The Devlin Made Me Do It is the third episode of the second season of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, and the twelfth episode overall. Birdman is hired to defend Ernie Devlin, an aging stuntman whose stunt was imitated by "Little Bobby."

Plot Overview

A little kid who idolizes Ernie Devlin attempts to perform a stunt and winds up falling into a large canyon. Meanwhile, Avenger has apparently laid an egg but before they can discern if he's not really a he, Ernie Devlin bursts into Harvey's office. Devlin, now being sued by little Bobby's family, goes to Birdman for defense. Harvey attempts to settle with Stan Freezoid, the boy's lawyer, outside of court but fails to strike a deal.

At the trial, Peanut insists that Bobby is faking his injuries so Birdman calls him to the stand and attempts to do whatever he can to cause a reflex motion from Bobby. He throws Bobby to the ground and then realizes that Peanut is probably wrong. Freezoid has similar troubles with Devlin, who's unresponsive to his questions. Freezoid brings up several instances of inappropriate commercials broadcast during Devlin's television show.

Birdman redirects his defense to show that Devlin is not guilty by reason of insanity, due to a world that has neglected him and caused him to become addicted to pills. But, because a criminal defense can only be used in a criminal case, Devlin loses the case and they settle. In Harvey's office, the egg that was supposedly Avenger's hatches and turns out to be a winged Jesse Jackson.

• Opening Sequence: The cold opening sequence for the episode is juxtaposed against the actual opening sequence for Devlin.
• Devland: The rides which Freezoid brings up at the theme park are The Matterhorny and Prostitutes Of The Caribbean.

• Alternate Title: This episode was originally meant to be titled "Devlin May Cry."

Allusions and References

• Devlin: Ernie Devlin is a reference to the 1970s cartoon series Devlin, which was influenced somewhat by Evel Knievel. Devlin, in the cartoon, was a stuntman who worked with the circus and foiled schemes affecting his place of business. Episodes of the series were regularly followed by public service announcements regarding safety.
