Glee is a musical dramedy that aired on FOX. It follows high school teacher, Will Schuester, trying to reinvent the fictional William McKinley High School glee club, which competes on the show choir competition circuit while its disparate members deal with their relationships, sexuality, social issues, and learning how to become an effective. Alongside Schuester, the twelve-member cast includes cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury, Will's wife Terri Schuester, and the eight club members.

The series was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, who first conceived of the show as a film. The three men wrote every episode of the first two seasons, and Murphy and Falchuk initially served as the main directors. Glee features on-screen performance-based musical numbers that are selected by Murphy, who aims to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, and are produced by Adam Anders and Peer Åström. Songs that were covered in the show are released through iTunes during the week of an episode's broadcast, and a series of albums have been released through Columbia Records. The music on the show became a commercial success, with over thirty-six million digital single sales and eleven million album sales worldwide through October of 2011. Merchandise for the show includes DVD and Blu-ray releases, an iPad app, and karaoke games for the Wii.

During season 1, Glee received generally favorable reviews from critics, with Metacritic's weighted average of 77 out of 100 based on the show's eighteen critical reviews. That season was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, 4 Golden Globe Awards, 6 Satellite Awards, and 57 others, with wins including the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, and Emmy awards for Jane Lynch, guest star Neil Patrick Harris, and Ryan Murphy's direction of the pilot episode.
