Season One of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex premiered on October 1, 2002. The series is broken up into two sections. Episodes designated as "Stand Alone" are episodes with no significant bearing on the overall "Laughing Man" storyline. The other episodes, known as "Complex" episodes, tell the Laughing Man story. Those episodes are 4-6, 9, 11 and 20-26.

This first season tells a new story using the characters from the original Ghost in the Shell manga and movie. Section-9, an elite anti-crime unit, acts as the first line of defense against serious cyber-crimes like cyberbrain hacking and terrorism. The central investigation deals with The Laughing Man, a hacker with a fascination with Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger who commits acts of kidnapping and corporate sabotage to advance his ultimate goal.

The series was licensed by Bandai Entertainment in 2004 for an American release. The dubbed episodes began broadcast on Adult Swim on October 1, 2002.
