Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a cyberpunk anime program that deals with the operations of a covert department of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, known commonly as Section 9. As well as being covert, the commission deals primarily with technology-based crimes.

The series deals with several cases that are handled by Section 9, but also have season arcing storylines that are dealt with over the course of the entire season. Whether or not the episode deals with the main storyline of the season is indicated at the beginning of the episode on the episode title card. In season 1, "Stand Alone" episodes are one-shots that have nothing to do with the overall plot, while "Complex" episodes further the plot.

Ghost in the Shell is notable for its usage of computer generated art within the traditional 2D animation. The work of the production company has been critically acclaimed for subtlety instituting digital elements into scenes, enhancing the atmosphere. These elements include digital color grading, environmental effects, and cell-shaded computer models.

The series was popular enough to warrant the production of a second season, where the series was renamed Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG. Both seasons have been dubbed into English and broadcast in the United States on Adult Swim.
