Plot Overview

Force 10 reporter Grace Ryan reports at the location of a massive fire in the city's warehouse district. The fire is the result of a battle between Disastron, the last surviving member of the Chaos Council, and Awesome-X, the city's very own superhero. Now that Awesome-X has defeated every supervillain, rumor has it that he and his mercenary robots, the X-Tacles, will be retiring.

Back at Crews Company, Xander Crews discovers that his right-hand man, Stan, was responsible for issuing a press release of his retirement as Awesome-X. Stan wants Xander to drop the superhero nonsense and start running his multi-national conglomerate by first firing the Xtacles, a $5 million dollar annual drain on the company. Xander refuses to fire his "dawgs" unless they suddenly somehow lose $5 million.

While riding around in his limo, Xander picks up a prostitute and brings her back to his mansion. As they're having sex in his bed, Xander's girlfriend, Grace Ryan, walks in to find Awesome-X and the prostitute. Xander, as Awesome-X, orders Grace Ryan to go back to her house and wait for Xander, and is then forced to pay the prostitute $5 million to keep his Awesome-X identity a secret. With the Xtacles annual salary blown on the hooker, Awesome-X heads to their flying headquarters to break the news and stumbles into a trap.

Awesome-X guns down several of the X-Tacles until they reveal it was all a surprise party for him. The X-Tacles learn that they've lost their 401k and health insurance, and want to kill Xander Crews. The X-Tacles give Awesome-X his present, an Awesome-X doll made of sculpting clay, which gives Xander the idea for a line of Awesome-X dolls.

Later, Xander reveals to Stan that he has converted all of his factories over to the production of Awesome-X dolls. Since he's defeated all the supervillains, Xander creates the Dread Lobster — Watley with giant lobster claws grafted to his arms — as Awesome-X's new supervillain, but Watley passes out. Stan chastises Xander for what he's done and how no one is going to buy a superhero doll without a villain, but Xander pulls out one of Killface's postcards and wonders if he could be the supervillain.

  • Crews Company: Xander converts all his factories over to Awesome-X action figure production, even though he doesn't have any villains. He converts Whatley into "the Dread Lobster" before settling on Killface for a villain.

Behind the Scenes

Allusions and References

  • TiVo: Awesome-X gives a shout-out to the X-Tacles, prompting one of the X-Tacles to wish they had TiVo to record it. TiVo is a popular digital video recorder, allowing users to record video to hard disk storage for later viewing.
  • Xander's Parents: Xander claims to have started his superhero identity of Awesome-X to fight crime in the memory of his murdered parents. This is a possible reference to Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman.
  • Nixon: At the Party Store, one of the X-Tacles puts on a Richard Nixon mask and states that he will "open communist China to the west." This is a reference to the Nixon administration's attempts to improve relations with China in the 70s in order to gain a strategic advantage over the Soviet Union.
X-Tacle: I will open China to the West.
  • COBRA: One of the X-Tacles asks if they're eligible for COBRA, prompting Awesome-X to ask if he means the G.I. Joe dolls. Cobra Command is the fictional enemies of G.I. Joe. What the X-Tacle really meant was COBRA, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985. COBRA mandates an insurance program giving some employees the ability to continue health insurance coverage after leaving employment.
X-Tacle: Are we at least eligible for COBRA?
  • Boys from Brazil: After seeing that the Board of Directors consists seemingly of clones of Stan, Xander tells Stan that he doesn't care what kind of Boys from Brazil thing he has going on in there. In The Boys from Brazil, Josef Mengele clones 94 copies of Adolf Hitler and attempts to have each of them undergo the same childhood experiences and rearing that Hitler had, in order to re-create his psyche and re-establish the Nazi regime.
Xander: I don't care what Boys from Brazil thing you've got going on in there.
  • Stretch Armstrong and the Transformers: Stan tells Xander that he can't sell any Awesome-X dolls without a supervillain, such as a Stretch Monster to a Stretch Armstrong. Stretch Armstrong was an action figure produced by Kenner. Stretch Monster was one of Stretch Armstrong's villains. Stan also mentions the Decepticons and Autobots, the villains and heroes, respectively, of the Transformers.
Stan: A stretch monster to your Stretch Armstrong! A Decepticon to your Autobot!
