[edit] Allusions and References

  • The title refers to Edward Hopper's painting of the same name, which has strong themes of alienation and isolation. In addition to the direct reference:
  • A couple in the corner of Der Wafflehaus closely echo a couple in the painting, in particular the woman wears red;
  • George also wears red under her coat;
  • The closing shot of the episode directly recreates the painting.
  • Another Hopper painting featured, New York Movie, shows a lonely looking cinema usher who looks strikingly like Daisy.
  • Other paintings featured are:
  • one of Monet's paintings of Rouen Cathedral;
  • another Hopper, Hotel Room.
  • George refers to an 'allegedly great writer' describing death as 'The Big Sleep'. The writer was Raymond Chandler.

[edit] Memorable Moments

  • George and Rube's fierce confrontation over Rube's appointment at George's former home.
  • For the first time we see a sympathetic look at Daisy as George speculates that she is sad about something.
  • All of the reapers confronting the question "Why are you here?"
  • George breaking down as she recalls a bright sunny day - the last time she sat on her porch

[edit] Quotes

Rube: One thing you should know about me. I'm a problem solver.
George: How do I put this delicately.
Rube: Try and choose your words carefully.
George: Blow me.
