• Much of the behind-the-scenes tension from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stemmed from the casting of Rebecca Gayheart as Betty. Gayheart was involved in a car accident in which a child was killed and she was completely at fault. Executives were uncomfortable with the connection of the scandal and Gayheart taking on the role of a grim reaper. Bryan Fuller fought this opinion until he left the series, but it seems that it had always been written that Betty would exit the series early, considering that she's the only reaper who isn't billed.
• Betty was meant to return from the afterlife at the beginning of season two, had the writers who took control of Dead Like Me followed a plan originally set by Bryan Fuller. However, they deviated heavily from Fuller's original concept and never looked back, leaving Betty still a mystery.
