Dead Like Me follows the story of George, an 18-year-old college dropout and all around slacker, who, on her first day of work, gets hit by a toilet seat from a de-orbiting space station. After her death, she finds that she has been selected to become a Grim Reaper.
Dead Like Me doesn't follow the convention of reapers in black cloaks with scythes, but is instead about normal people who are undead... not zombies or vampires, just a little "living-impaired." They lived their lives, but instead of moving on when they died, they were chosen to become Reapers. The Reapers "pop" the soul out of the living before they die as a "public service." However, they aren't paid for this service, and must also work or "borrow" (as Mason puts it) what they can off of the dead to get by. Each Reaper has a certain number of souls they have to "pop" before they can move on. The only problem is, none of them know just what their number is.
Rube is the leader of the group. He's the man between death and the actual reapers; middle management more or less. He is also the one who creates the post-its, from which the reapers work, which list the ETD (Estimated Time of Death), the first initial, last name and place of death of the unfortunate soul whose number has come due. The deaths are caused, not as much by fate as by the gravelings: nasty demon-like creatures that get their kicks by dropping pianos on the living.
MGM Television produced and distributes the series.
