Plot Overview

Dominic is put in a position when a prisoner, serving time for killing a cop, wants him to file a writ of habeas corpus because he claims he died in custody.

Meanwhile, a search is out for a young boy whose mother was beaten to death, as Morris looks into a man found dead in an elevator.

Notes

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • Dominic brings up Flynn's departure and tells Kelly he'd make a good candidate.

Characters

  • Kim shows up to ask Mick for some money to buy clothes for a job interview. In the parking lot, she meets Sunny after accidentally scratching her car. In exchanging information, she casually refers to herself as Mick's wife. Sunny doesn't reveal her relationship with him other than that they work together.
  • Flynn shares a final drink with Dominic on what is presumably his last day as Chief Coroner.

Allusions and References

  • When Dominic mentions finding the kid "dead or alive," it reminds Leo of the show Wanted: Dead or Alive.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Repairman: So you guys are, what, paramedics?
Lou: Body removal. We get the calls paramedics screw up.
  • Henry Mars: So picture this: my buddy, he's the one that's old enough to buy the booze, so he goes in. I'm just sittin' there, thinking about getting drunk. Now, how the hell do I know he's gonna rob the place? I don't even think he knows. Next thing, I hear shots. My buddy comes runnin' out, screaming, "Move it! Let's get outta here!"
Dominic: And what did you do? Did you go in there and try and help that cop whose life was bleeding out? No, you drove that son of a bitch away!
Henry Mars: Yeah, and I've been driving that goddamn car ever since.
  • Madam Justice Mishra: Well, it seems to me Mister Mars did die and I'm afraid it begs the question of how long a person is dead before the coroner recognises that he is dead?
Dominic: M'Lady, a man is dead when he, uh, actually stays dead.
Madam Justice Mishra: Mister Mars was legally and, to the best of our knowledge, clinically dead. And I'm afraid the fact that you ignored that evidence does leave the court to suspect bias.
Dominic: Bias? M'Lady, bias and common sense are two completely different things. All right. It's clearly Mister Mars's agenda to have me record his death so he can obtain a writ of habeas corpus and appeal to be released.
Madam Justice Mishra: What Mister Mars does with his death registration is not the issue.
Dominic: But, M'Lady, common sense would... I mean, he's actually sitting here in your chambers. This man is not dead.
Madam Justice Mishra: Unfortunately, common sense and the law are also two different things.
