- His mother, Rosalie was a teacher and a social worker for the mentally handicapped and his late father, Julius (who died after ulcer surgery in 1988) was a truck driveer and a newspaper deliveryman.
- Has six younger siblings: Andre, Tony, Brian, Kenny, Andi and Jordan
- Had a half-brother, Charles (who died in 2006 due to alcoholism)
- His grandfather, Allen Rock was a preacher
- Dropped out of high school, but later got his GED
