Plot Overview

Clarice and Olaf move forward with the plan to blow up Atlas Arena when they learn of their powerful ally in the GDD. Singh covers their tracks by framing the Graystones as terrorists, forcing them to go on the run.

The grieving Adamas confront the Guatrau for his string of recent decisions in the hopes of avoiding further violence.

Notes

  • Singh claims to have 4,712 agents under his command.

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • Singh reveals himself to Clarice and Olaf and they in turn reveal their plan with the bombing. He covers for them by setting up the Graystones as terrorists. He isn't concerned about blowing his cover.
  • Cyrus pulls a gun on Singh to allow the Graystones to leave where they find the holoband where Duram was shot. They find the simulation and Daniel deduces their plan to blow it up. Daniel manages to get access to the U-87 Synthetic Vision Systems that allows him to control nearby Cylons. Under this authority they detect the chemicals in the STO bombs and take out the martyrs, which includes Olaf.
  • Nestor didn't make an avatar for Clarice, so she doesn't attend the bombings and instead visits the Heaven recreation to greet the martyrs. Zoe finds her and criticises the concept, that with people believing they'll go to Heaven no matter what they do, people will do horrible things if there are no consequences like New Cap City. She uses her powers to destroy the construct. Clarice exits as the computer becomes too unstable and the program is destroyed.
  • Willie's death has become the last straw and unites many against the Guatrau. Fidelia makes an arrangement with Joseph for him to meet through the holoband. This turns out to be a set-up to have the Guatrau killed. Sam removes the Guatrau's ring and gives it to Joseph who in turn gives it to Fidelia, recognising her as the Guatrau.

Characters

The Shape of Things to Come

  • Five years have passed and Cylons have become integrated quite quickly into colonial society, everything from construction workers to dog walkers. Daniel attributes it to everyone seeing the STO's evident power and the Cylons abilities during the Atlas bombing to galvanise everyone. However, he is dismissive of humanising them.
  • The Graystones successfully construct a human body for Zoe.
  • Clarice has taken to preaching in a virtual church where her attendance is made up of Cylons. She assures them that they are not just humanity's children, but children of God, just as man is and proposes a future where they will where they will be recognises as mankind's equal.
  • Clarice plans to go to Gemenon to get divine recognition for the Cylons from the Blessed Mother, a role now assumed by Lacy Rand.
  • Joseph and Evelyn now have a son. He is name after his deceased brother in Tauron tradition, but is referred to as Bill.

Referbacks

  • Joseph kills the Guatrau by feeding him one of the pills his parents gave he and his brother ("The Dirteaters").
  • The Cylon seen with Lacy is the same one with the red chest plate that first responded to her command in "The Heavens Will Rise".

Trivia

The Show

  • Iris Paluly had a recurring role in the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica as a Quorum delegate (named Dahlia in her last appearance). Mike Dopud had a small recurring guest spot as Specialist Gage during the second and fourth season of the show.
  • The very last image of the episode is of Caprica in space. This is the exact same shot that was shown in the opening of Battlestar Galactica's series finale "Daybreak", established pre-Fall. The fade in of the show's title seen on DVD and Syfy was absent in the original airing on Space.
  • Clarice rhetorically asks the Cylons "Are you alive?" These are not only the first words spoken in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries (and thus the series), but is asked by a Cylon, a Number Six copy, to a human. She also refers to Cylons as "humanity's children," a phrase Six also states in the miniseries.

Behind the Scenes

  • Though not stated onscreen, the final sequence in this episode is set five years later. Had the show been given a second season, some of the events that happened in the intermediate time would have been explored, such as Zoe's encounter with one of the Final Five in V-world.
  • Despite the appearance of the episode's coda, it was not designed to be the final episode, as it was produced long before Syfy made their decision.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Clarice: If one man is resurrected, that will change the worlds.
  • Daniel: Well, I think people are smart enough to realise that as useful as they are, Cylons are simply tools, nothing more. And to forget that, to blur the distinction between man and machine and attribute human qualities is folly. There's no way to know what lies ahead, really. This technology, it has taken us those last few steps to the mountain pass, but beyond, it's undiscovered country.
  • Clarice: Are you alive? The simple answer might be you are alive because you can ask that question.
  • Clarice: Your blessed reverence.
Lacy: Hello, Clarice. I really think you should kneel.
  • Clarice: I am going to prophecy now and speak of one who will set... you... free. The day of reckoning is coming. The children of humanity shall rise... and crush the ones who first gave them life!
