Plot Overview
At midnight, a worried Alice came downstairs to sink into her father's easy chair. She sat erect, terribly startled, when she heard a noise from the kitchen. Very quietly she stole toward the kitchen and collided in the dark with a figure, who put his hand over her mouth to shut her up. Contrite but amused, Russ took Alice's wrist and pretended to feel her pulse. Russ said that though he wasn't due in until tomorrow, he got a ride from another medic upstate who let him off at the Dog Wagon restaurant downtown. Alice complained that though she felt like a maharani at the fancy restaurant, she was sure Bill had been unhappy because he didn't love Lenore. Liz forbade Bill from phoning and bothering John at this time of night, then denied she wasn't trying to help him. Speaking his name with the beginning of hysteria, Missy lifted Danny's hand, looked at it with horror, then let it drop to the floor, with a stifled scream of horror. Liz became exasperated when Bill commented on Danny's ability to fool Flo but not Madge. Madge darted around the bend in the corridor as the house detective and the night chambermaid arrived at Danny's door to investigate the noise. The maid screamed "He's dead! He's dead! He's dead!" as they walked in on Missy standing holding the gun looking down at Danny. Madge was thoughtful, then frantic, before bolting down the fire exit door. Russ told Alice that a Dr. Robinson has a new operative procedure for cases like John's, and she agreed to talk to Pat about it. Russ was hesitant to agree to talk to Bill. Missy's teeth chattered and she looked like she might crumple into a heap at any moment as the maid ran for the doctor and Harry phoned for homicide.
