Season Three of American Horror Story, entitled American Horror Story: Coven, premiered on October 9, 2013. The season takes place primarily in present-day New Orleans and revolves around a witches' coven led by Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange), a Supreme possessing powers more powerful than ordinary witches. The primary caretaker of the coven is her daughter Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson), who oversees teenage witches Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), Nan (Jamie Brewer), and newcomer Zoe Benson (Taissa Farmiga). The season also intertwines the centuries-old rivalry between Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) and Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett).

When another witch (Misty Day, portrayed by Lily Rabe) is accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake, Cordelia's mother Fiona, the Supreme and most powerful witch of the coven, returns to help protect the school. Meanwhile, Madison and Zoe attend a fraternity party with disastrous consequences.
