Plot Overview

While Malloy is acting Sergeant in Mac's absence, Reed is teamed up with a headstrong rookie, whose tendency to not listen to the older officer almost proves disastrous.

Gus Corbin is a rookie with tremendous potential but also thinks he's been an officer for many years, and thus has the wisdom, knowledge and experience of someone with more years than his training officer, Reed.

A few examples of things gone wrong:

  • Corbin captures a purse snatcher but puts the handcuffs on too tight. When the suspect complains about the tightness, Reed – upon checking – adjusts the cuffs to their proper tightness, and in front of Corbin. Later, Reed explains the error to Corbin further.
  • During a burglary stakeout, Corbin searches the store without any backup or following a plan that Malloy had carefully mapped out. While all of the suspects are captured without further incident, both Malloy and Reed are pissed and remind the rookie about how he needs to do what he's told.
  • Following another pursuit of a robbery suspect, Corbin goes on a foot pursuit ... but had forgotten to secure his holster. As such, what could have happened – his gun fell out of the holster and onto the ground – happened. Reed immediately sees the weapon on the ground and tries yelling after Corbin, but is out of earshot. Fortunately, Corbin – who realizes his predicament – is able to make like he has his firearm with him and captures the suspect.
