WLVI is a CW affiliate in Boston, Massachusetts. The station broadcasts on digital channel 41 displayed to tuners on virtual channel 56 and is owned by Sunbeam Television. Its sister station is independent WHDH channel 7.
WLVI began in 1953 as call letters WTAO-TV as a dual DuMont/ABC affiliate. In 1956, the station dropped both networks and went silent until 1962 when the station was brought back on the air as an independent station. In 1965, the station's call letters were changed to WXHR-TV, a year later it became WKBG-TV when Kaiser Broadcasting purchased the station. In 1974, the station's call letters were changed again to the current WLVI-TV. In 1995, the station became an affiliate of The WB upon the network's launch. In 1998, the station went off the air for a short time after a crash in its studios and was later brought back to the air. In 2006, The WB and UPN shut down and formed The CW and WLVI immediately became an affiliate of the network.
WLVI has sold their digital channel 41 spectrum in the spectrum auction and in the near future will relocate their digital signal to a subcarrier of WHDH while retaining 56 as their virtual channel.
