Plot Overview

After being transported by Mokona, they crash land at a market in another strange country. Quickly they are confronted by a large and boorish man, the son of the local Ryoshi (feudal lord). He grabs Sakura by the arm, but Syaoran knocks him down. He starts to advance toward Syaoran, but then a girl called Chun'yan starts yelling at him from a rooftop. One of his men whispers in his ear, and he leaves, vowing to continue this some other time. Syaoran and the others offer to help clean up the mess they made when they arrived.

Back at the lord's castle, the father has summoned his son because his magical power source flared suddenly. His son immediately mentions the people he saw in the market.

At the market, they are almost done cleaning up, when Chun'yan arrives. She immediately invites them back to her house. There, it turns out she thought they were Miteshu - agents from the government who travel the country, looking for local troubles. After some silliness with Mokona, they all introduce themselves. They ask Chun'yan about the Ryoshi, but she are interrupted by a strange wind destroying part of her house. It was cast by the Ryoshi, who now knows they are there. He has one of Sakura's feathers.

Fai and Kurogane get to work repairing Chun'yan's house, where she lives alone because her mother is dead. Chun'yan takes Sakura, Syaoran, and Mokona to the market, where Sakura plays a lottery, spinning a wheel filled with small balls. There are four winning balls in there, and all of them fall out onto the plate. So they buy new clothes for Sakura and Syaoran.

Sitting by a stream, Chun'yan comments on how lucky Sakura is, and asks if that was always true. Sakura can't remember, revealing she only knows her name and a city in the desert. But she knows they are looking for her lost memories.

Off in the distance they spot black smoke, and find the Ryoshi's son has burned down someone's house for not paying their taxes. He opens a giant fan, creating shadow warriors that Syaoran has no problems defeating. Chun'yan recognizes the fan as her mother's. She says that the father and son arrived a year ago, with no great magical ability. Suddenly, they got powerful, chasing out the old Ryoshi and destroying the town. When Chun'yan's mother tried to fight back, they killed her.

The Ryoshi interferes, sending another wind. A vortex forms in the sky. The son throws the fan up there, destroying it. Chun'yan says the Miteshu will come. When the Ryoshi's son leaves, Chun'yan takes the pieces of the fan and cries.

Notes

Locations

  • Koryo (town of Ryonfi)

Character History

  • Chun-yan's mother had some kind of magical ability. With her fan, she was able to revive a dying tree. We also see that the fan could have more malevolent uses when placed in the wrong hands.

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • The group arrives in Koryo.
  • The local lord has Sakura's feather and is using it to hurt the people of the town.

Characters

  • Sakura's Memory: Her home country of Clow.

Referbacks

  • Syaoran remembers Kurogane's advice from 1x06 about not looking back.

Trivia

Bumper

  • Mokona

Nicknames

  • Fai calls Kurogane "Kuro-kun", and even more insulting, "Kuro-puu". Kurogane is especially not amused by the last one. Especially when Mokona repeats it. Later on, Fai calls him "Kuro-pipi" but we don't see Kurogane's response.

Allusions and References

CLAMP References

  • Legend of Chun Hyang: Chun'yan. Here, she is also a young girl trying to free her village from an evil lord, waiting for a secret government agent to arrive and save the day.

Real World References

  • Mokona mentions Mito Kōmon, a Japanese series from 1978 that dramatized the life of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, a daimyo (feudal leader) in seventeenth century Japan. In this program, he would wander Japan disguised as a commoner, routing out corruption. This is similar to the "miteshu" that Chun'yan describes. Of course, the reference is completely lost on everyone else in the room, since the show doesn't exist in their worlds (in fact, none of them even have television).
  • Fai says Mokona is their "idol" - while Fai might mean this in the sense of symbol or token, Mokona seems to identify the term with a Japanese pop idol instead, spinning around and singing.

Memorable Moments

  • Mokona's Mito Kōmon impression.
