Plot Overview

Fai and Syaoran talk about what's been happening with the children. Syaoran mentions how they don't seem to have anyone who does magic in this world anymore, so it's unlikely Sakura and the others were taken away with a spell. The townspeople come in and say they haven't found any clues, and Syaoran mentions the castle. They say they can't get across the river.

Sakura wakes up inside a cell in the castle. She is chained by the foot. When she peers into the hallway outside, she sees the five children from the night before.

Back in town, Dr. Rondart is off to make house calls to the remaining children, who are shaken up by the disappearances. He explains that the harvests have been poor, and Mr. Grosum is not cutting the town a break on rent. Rondart also mentions a rumor that Grosum is after Sakura's feather. He leaves, and Fai and Mokona speculate that Grosum is somehow behind the disappearances.

Sakura strains against her bonds in the castle.

They head to Mr. Grosum's house, but no one seems to be home. Mokona sneaks into the house and lets the others in through the front door. They find a few things in Grosum's library: a copy of the country's history book (the same one Syaoran borrowed from Dr. Rondart), blueprints of the castle plus maps of the surrounding area, and a list of the missing children. Just then, Grosum comes in and demands to know what Syaoran is doing. He tells the man that he is investigating the disappearances. Grosum asks if Syaoran doubts his innocence, and Syaoran responds that he is just gathering facts right now, because his father taught him to get the facts together before making a judgment. Grosum says Syaoran reminds him of himself when he was younger. He lends Syaoran his copy of the history book.

While Kurogane and Fai fight over another one of Fai's silly nicknames, Syaoran trips, and Kurogane pulls him out of the snow. He tells Syaoran not to apologize, and tromps off. Fai says he is worried about Sakura.

Sakura finally breaks the bed she was chained to, which gets her to the door of the cell.

As he walks outside, Syaoran notices that the history book Grosum gave him has several pages the doctor's did not. He looks up and sees a child in a window, pointing at a black bird that isn't there. Dr. Rondart comes over and leads the child away from the window.

That night, Dr. Rondart is working in his room, when he sees a short hooded figure walk. He grabs his coat and hurries out the door.

Fai and Kurogane are at the river, and they enter a shed where the water gate is. Kurogane moves the controls for the gate with brute force.

Sakura continues to work on the cell door, and eventually manages to open it. She walks down the hall into a large room with a spire in it. The children are standing around the tall spire, and when Sakura looks up, she sees her feather. Princess Emeraude appears behind her, and explains how the feather came to the castle. When it came, people began to fight over its power, and her parents were killed. Then plague came to the town, affecting the children. If the children were near the feather, they were spared. So the princess let them live in the castle, and once the plague passed after many years, they returned home. The feather itself was sealed away by a magician so it could not cause any more trouble. When Sakura asks about the children disappearing now, Emeraude explains that it is not her doing, and she has been trying to stop it. Princess Emeraude explains that the pure hearts of the children were needed to free the feather from its shell, and asks Sakura to join the children in freeing it now. The feather is released, floating into Sakura's hands.

Kyle Rondart arrives at the river, noticing it has stopped flowing and that the hooded figure is missing. Syaoran, Fai, and Kurogane are waiting there. Syaoran asks him where Sakura and the children are.
