Plot Overview

James travels to Sydney to talk to Jeremy, although he can barely afford the flight, but he gets stuck at Lydia's. James has thought of Lydia ever since that fateful night. Unfortunately this isn't mutual as Lydia had completely forgotten about him. Lizzie resumes work as a travel agent but her heart isn't in it. Still haunted by Dave, she obsessively tries to locate his family. When she finally succeeds and visits them, she doesn't have the heart to tell them that he died. Nic tells Julie after class that he wouldn't have had sex with her if he had known that she was a student. She fails to hand in her algebra assignment and expects him to pass her in exchange for sexual favors. Instead, Nic resigns from his job and decides to return to Australia but ends up staying at Lizzie's in Tamsin's old room.

Characters

  • Tamsin works with a law firm. When she tries to call Lizzie she reaches Nic; the two haven't spoken or e-mailed since their affair in Bangkok. Nic tells her of his disfortune and she offers him to stay in her room in London.
  • Ned has difficulties landing an acting role since they all require him to speak in one of the many British accents he's still trying to learn.
  • Callum has trouble coping with his homosexuality. When the police raid the construction site, he is arrested because the work visa Lizzie arranged isn't quite in order.
  • Jeremy confronts Lydia and learns that his brother James is Ned's biological father. Annabel can tell that Jeremy is upset but he doesn't tell her why. She eventually learns from the adoption agency that Jeremy is infertile and feels appropriately hurt.
  • Dave: Lizzie find the rehab clinic Dave mentioned where she learns that his real name was Jim and that he didn't work there but was a patient.

Trivia

Allusions and References

  • Mamma Mia!: Titled after the 1975 hit song, Mamma Mia! is a musical based on the songs of 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA. Bob alludes to the stereotypical popularity of ABBA in the gay community.
Bob: You know, generations of poofs who fought for the right to see Mamma Mia! twenty-three times.

Quotes

  • Lizzie (to prospective customers): Mind you, there is nothing too exotic about being trampled to death by a hippo. I mean, chances are very, very remote. Much more likely to get dysentry or bilharziosis.
  • Mr. Allenby: You know, Lizzie, to this day I remember your description of a sunset over the Hindukush. It made me excited about travel.
Lizzie: That's before I went there. I got held up at gunpoint at the Hindukush and a monkey stole my sunglasses.
  • (Julie's algebra assigment): MATHS SUX BUT NOT AS GOOD AS JULIE DOES.
  • Lydia: Oh, I am not a control freak. I simply want people to do precisely what I want, exactly when I ask it.
