Plot Overview
The children of Springfield Elementary go on a field trip to a Civil War battlefield but lack the funds to pay the $5 admission fee. When they attempt to secretly "steal" an educational experience, they are chased off by the battle re-enacters. Skinner and Krabappel quarrel over the school's budget, and Bart exploits their rift, causing a teacher's strike. Without the structure of school, Lisa nearly cracks up but Bart is thrilled with his greater capacity for mischief.
When talks between teachers and the administration break down even further, the PTA resorts to replacing teachers with totally unqualified residents of Springfield. Bart takes advantage yet again, eliminating every substitute with a reign of humiliating terror until he meets his match: his own mother, Marge. Unwilling to use his evil tactics on her, Bart concocts a final plan to end the strike which leads to a bizarre civic compromise.
