- Spawn: The comic book that Buttercup is reading (Spore) and the new persona that she assumes (Mange) are both based on the gritty Todd McFarlane comic Spawn. The series revolves around a murdered soldier who makes a deal with the devil to return to earth, but finds himself turned into a deformed, super-powerful creature. The trademark feature of his costume is a living cape that writhes constantly.
- Wonder Woman: The comic book that Blossom is reading (Freedom Gal) and the new persona that she assumes (Liberty Belle) are based on the patriotically-costumed DC Comics heroine, Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman wields a golden lasso that forces those tied up in it to tell the truth, and she wears golden wristbands that can deflect bullets. At various points in her history, Wonder Woman has also piloted an invisible plane. Interestingly enough, "Liberty Belle" is the name of another DC heroine from the Golden Age of Comics.
- Monster Island: Steve mentions coming from 'Monster Isle'. Monster Island is a location in several Japanese films where Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and numerous other monsters live.
