The New Casper Cartoon Show was an animated fantasy that aired on ABC. It was a television revival of the Casper the Friendly Ghost theatrical cartoons produced from 1944 to 1957 by the Paramount-Famous Studios unit in New York. It was renamed Paramount Animation and produced this series.
Casper's adventures were more of a fantasy nature and didn't fall back on the theatrical shorts' formula of people being scared of him when he tried to make friends. His supporting cast consisted of the Ghostly Trio (his uncles), Wendy the Good Little Witch, his cousin Spooky, and his flying horse Nightmare.
Two Casper cartoons were shown, with the middle feature a screening of Paramount's theatrical series Modern Madcaps, seen the previous season on Paul Winchell's Cartoonies. These cartoons mainly featured one-shot characters, although a few animated stars had more than one short such as Ralph and Percy (renamed Shorty and Swifty later), Jeepers and Creepers, Goodie the Gremlin, and Abner the Baseball (actually appeared in a two-reeler split up into two parts. Abner was--according to the Eddie Lawrence comedy record from where the soundtrack for the cartoon is used--the baseball that Mickey Mantle hit to set a record for farthest a ball has traveled for a home run, and as such was enshrined at the Baseball Hall of Fame).
The New Casper Cartoon Show ran one season of first run and continued on ABC to the end of the 1969-70 season. It went syndicated afterwards. Casper appeared twice more on Saturdays, on Hanna-Barbera's Casper and the Angels (1979) and Universal's Casper (1996), based on the Christina Ricci movie.
