Trivia

The Show

  • A color version of this episode, which clocked in at just over 13 minutes, was originally produced as the unaired pilot episode for The Munsters to pitch the series to CBS. In that version of the episode (which led to CBS picking up the show in an announcement on February 18, 1964), a brattier version of Eddie Munster was played by child actor Happy Derman, while Herman originally had a different wife named Phoebe, played by Joan Marshall. In addition, a different theme was used for the show's opening credit sequence, rather than the more familiar surf rock-styled theme used on the show itself. Although it was originally planned to produce The Munsters in color, because of the expense of producing shows in color at the time, both CBS and Universal Television were unwilling to commit to paying extra for color, so a second pilot, with Butch Patrick replacing Derman as Eddie and the character of Phoebe Munster replaced by Lily (with Yvonne De Carlo cast to play her), was filmed in black and white, which was how the series itself was ultimately produced. The original color pilot is included as a bonus episode on The Munsters' Season One DVD box set and the Complete Series set.
