Origin

The Great Space Chase is an animated comedy adventure which originally aired as a 16-chapter serial on CBS's The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle in the 1979-80 season. Each chapter was six minutes long. Filmation Associates produced it. Norm Prescott (uncredited) voiced Mighty Mouse, Alan Oppenheimer voiced Oil Can Harry, while Diane Pershing voiced Queen Pearl.

The story, which spoofs both Flash Gordon and Star Wars, has galaxy ruler Queen Pearl being pursued by Harry the Heartless (Oil Can Harry), who covets the secret Doomsday Device entrusted to Queen Pearl for delivery. Mighty Mouse joins Queen Pearl to guard the device but soon gets caught up in Harry's machinations--among them switching bodies with Pearl so he can ferret out the Device's location from the hero.

The serial was re-edited as an 88-minute movie and had limited theatrical release in December of 1982 by Paramount Pictures (a division of Viacom, which owned the Terrytoons characters and library at the time). It was released on home video three years later. Mighty Mouse is currently owned by CBS.
