Plot Overview

Ever since the original arrest of Dr. Richard Kimble, Lt. Phillip Gerard has kept a national want circulated to notify him of the arrest of any one-armed man who commits a violent crime against a woman. Now, a year after Kimble's escape, Gerard receives news that just such a man has surfaced in Los Angeles. The lieutenant immediately makes plans to fly to the coast to interview the man.

Meanwhile, a short distance from L.A. in Santa Barbara, Kimble has been living under the name of Jeff Cooper and working for the sailmaking firm of kindly, fatherly invalid Lars Christian. Kimble's plans to move on are complicated by Lars' niece Karen's infatuation for him. Lars, telling Kimble that Karen suffered the death of her mother and the abondonment of her father at a young age, is concerned for her emotional security. Kimble also finds himself beginning to have feelings for Karen, and against his better judgment succumbs to the entreaties of her and her father and agrees to stay in Santa Barbara a while longer.

Two other individuals on the scene futher complicate Kimble's precarious existence: Ray Brooks, the local doctor, who likes Kimble but feels jealously towards him because of a previous involvement with Karen; and Eric, Lars' adopted son, who is fiercely protective of Karen and views Kimble with intense distrust and suspicion.

When Kimble goes sailing with Karen one afternoon, Eric's argument with Lars over allowing her to go causes the elderly man to suffer a heart attack which proves fatal. Lars' death has increased Karen's dependancy on Kimble, but it has also further intisfied Eric's dislike of him. Shifting his own guilt for Lars' death onto the fugitive, Eric announces his intent to persecute Kimble until he leaves town.

However, Kimble sees a solution to his dilemma when he spots the notice of the one-armed man's arrest in L.A. in a newspaper. Knowing that it could mean clearing his name and eventual freedom, he tells Karen that he needs to take a trip to the county jail to talk to the man. If it does turn out to be Kimble's man, he tells her, he will be able to return to her, if not, he will have to move on as he planned before. Karen, unbeknownst to Kimble and against his wishes, follows him to the munincipal Hall of Justice in the downtown section of the city.

Liuetenant Gerard has also arrived at the jail at the same time to seek out the same man. Kimble suffers a crushing disappointment upon learning that the man at the jail is not the same as the one he saw the night of his wife's murder. Then, as he is leaving the building, he is spotted by Gerard who immediately gives pursuit. Fleeing the building, Kimble encounters Karen, who refuses to leave his side. With Karen's aid, Kimble manages to elude Gerard in a thrilling chase through the streets and freeways of Los Angeles. Kimble and Karen return to Santa Barbara. Despite his near-recapture and the presence of Gerard, Kimble remains unwilling to leave the newfound life he has found with Karen. Rationalizing that the last thing Lt. Gerard will expect him to do is to stay on the west coast, he rashly determines to stay in the secluded life he has established at the Christian sailmakers in Santa Barbara.

Meanwhile, a foiled Lt. Gerard ponders his only clue to Kimble's whereabouts - a match found at the jail's visiting room that Kimble used to light a cigarette. A match bearing in tiny imprinted letters the single word "SAILS" . . .
