From The TV IV

2008 is the thirteenth year of The Daily Show and began on January 7, 2008. The first episode of the year was also the first episode since the beginning of the Writers Guild strike. Because The Daily Show's writing staff is made up of union members, the show was produced without written material for the duration of the strike. In order to fill time, Stewart would ad-lib about the news of the day, correspondent pieces were improvised and old or shelved pieces were aired. The guests were largely political or pundits because Screen Actors Guild members refused to cross picket lines.

In the first writerless episode, Stewart explained that viewers were not seeing The Daily Show, but A Daily Show and would remain as such until the dispute is ended. The title was formally changed in the intro on the January 9th episode. It was changed back when the writers returned on February 13, 2008.

The presidential election will make this season, like those in 2000 and 2004, a pivotal one for both The Daily Show and popular culture. It is expected that the show will cover both Democratic and Republican conventions, as well as the presidential debates and other political events on location.
