The Boondocks is an animated comedy series that was adapted from Aaron McGruder's comic strip of the same name. The series follows Riley and Huey, two African-American boys who move out of Chicago into a suburb with their grandfather. The comic strip is known for its heavy liberal slant on politics, but McGruder has said that the series will be more like the early days where the politics were there but the comedy was more important.
Even prior to its debut, the series was a lightning rod for controversy. The pilot episode contained several references to Rosa Parks that were removed after her death in late October 2005 and many critics have commented that the show's use of racial slurs (particularly between black people) is inappropriate and has no place in a cartoon on a channel like the Cartoon Network, which is primarily aimed towards children. Supporters have pointed out that Adult Swim is technically not the same channel as Cartoon Network, and only starts at 11:00 p.m., and is thus obviously not intended for children. Despite this, several episodes have been pulled from air and can only be seen on DVD due to their content.
The series premiered on Adult Swim on November 6, 2005 after being delayed from its original planned date.
