Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a science fiction drama series that takes place in the Terminator universe. Chronologically, the series and the characters start in 1999, five years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but they jump to 2007 during the pilot. It will follow Sarah Connor and her teenage son's attempts to prevent Skynet from becoming self-aware and, by extension, nuclear holocaust.

Although the Terminator mythology continued into Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, series creator Josh Friedman said in an interview that the movie has been shunted into an alternate timeline. This explains away several continuity issues, most notably being Sarah Connor's death in 1997 of leukemia—a script change made necessary by Linda Hamilton declining to appear in the movie. It also means that Judgment Day will not certainly begin on July 24, 2004, and that it is still preventable.
