Talk:Lost/Cursed Numbers

From The TV IV
Jump to: navigation, search

Someone has included the number '108' under the heading for 8, in reference to a painting on Desmond's walls. This number is the sum of all the other numbers (4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42 = 108 ) and should probably be listed elsewhere.

Shouldn't somebody point out how the numbers match Messier Objects, and that, of those 6 objects, two have symbols that match the bunkers? Or is that too speculative right now?

What does the fact that "There were 6 members of Rousseau’s research team" have to do with the number 15?

This originally stated that there were 15 members. Someone edited the statement to be correct instead of removing it from the list, which I just did. DCEdwards1966 | Talk 17:46, 20 February 2006 (EST)

The Cursed Number 16

The message being referred to under #16 is the message that Rosseau created. This is the message that Sayid detected on the radio and Shannon translated. That message had been playing for 16 years based on the duration of the message and the number of iterations that had been played.

Although, since Rosseau said she changed the message, it is possible that the iteration counter was not reset. This could mean that she hasn't been on the island 16 years. DCEdwards1966 | Talk 17:46, 20 February 2006 (EST)

The Significance of The Numbers outside of Lost

Why was my entry on Japanese superstitions about the numbers 4 and 8 removed? --Hprill 17:55, 20 February 2006 (EST)

I didn't notice that you had made 2 edits when I reverted the edit about the number of years that Rousseau had been on the island. I have readded the information. DCEdwards1966 | Talk 19:37, 20 February 2006 (EST)

Rousseau Theory

Quote: There is a theory by a man named Rousseau that says you have a twin somewhere in the world, and that you are only four degrees of separation away from that person.

   * Numeric Breakdown:
o 4 degrees of separation exist.
o There is an 8th continent: the Lost island.
o 15 chances of meeting yourself on this place exist, as in 15 out of 4,815,162,342.
o 16 people can meet their twin all at the same time.
o 23 is the exact number of years you and your twin are. You are not the same age as your twin. By chance and probability it takes 23 years exactly for the same genes to be made to form another you.
o 42 is the maximum number of years you and your twin can be alive at the same time.

Does this make sense to anyone? There are 5 proper continents, how is a small island the 8th? How does that tie in with the twin? What kind of math is that 15 out of 4,815,162,342 business? And the next "fact"? It makes no sense. The 23 "fact" even less so. And the last is just as retarded. This sounds a lot like some stupid urban legend chain letter and I don't think it belongs here.

According to TV Squad this "theory" was exposed as a hoax. I will delete it. DCEdwards1966 | Talk 10:27, 13 June 2006 (EDT)

The Numbers in pi

I thought the "Around the 300,000,000th digit of pi, the sequence 88888888 (eight eights) appears." factoid was a bit arbitrary and nonsensical, so I replaced it with a more interesting fact, that the sequence "4815162342" occurs at position 176025488 of pi, and that the sequence "15162342" occurs at position 155209220. The original "fact" is also incorrect, since a sequence of eight eights actually occurs at position 46663520, not "around the 300000000th digit".
