Plot Overview

Lee delivers a report to a government official, downplaying the events thus far as not being a risk to national security but rather a moderate ecological concern. Having defused military and congressional interest in the creature problem, Lee reports in to a mysterious man in a greenhouse. The man in the greenhouse appears to have needed time to accomplish things and had Cirko killed for this reason.

Dee and Rich are able to evade their pursuers and go to the ocean. Stripping down, Dee goes swimming across the bay to Jackson's boat. Enlisting his help because of his familiarity with less than legal practices. He's previously worked as a smuggler, so he takes them on a sea plane to a place called 'The Boneyard' in California. Dee and Rich settle down to look more deeply into Cirko's research data while Jackson stores the sea orchid in a refridgerator, where it is disturbed and begins growing rapidly under the presence of electical current. Among the research materials are documents of casulaties including Rich's brother which shows just how well they've been tracking these creatures. Inspired by the observation that the sea orchid is fueled by electicity, Dee theorizes that the creatures congregate annually and create observable electrical storms. This is also tied to several scans of deep holes at the bottom of the ocean. The three of them decide the best chance to get irrefutable evidence of the creatures is to fabricate a submersible and go nearly a mile deep at the location the electical storms are next likely to be.

Miles and Phil observe the authorities dealing with the Animal Control officer, who is badly burned and near death. Fearing detection, the run off on foot. After much discussion, Miles is firm that he will not give up Nim. Stopped by the cops crossing a road, they try to reason with them but the two make a break for it and outrun the police, taking Nim out of his carrier to follow them freely. Miles calls his sister from a gas station and asks her to bring him his stash of money. She won't and further conversation is stopped when their parents and the cops realize that she's talking to Miles. While trying to decide what to do, police arrive at the gas station. Evading them, they steal a pizza delivery guy's car. While removing the telltale advertising from the car, Miles gets a plaintive call from his mother. Talking very openly, Miles eventually realizes that she is trying to keep him on to track him. Cornered by the police, Miles takes off on foot for the coastline and wades out to sea, eventually getting Nim to swim off on his own.

Notes

  • Rich and Jackson talk about any romantic interest in Dee, with Rich falling back on his married status. Rich does deduce that the reason Jackson is helping Dee is because he's still interested in her.
  • Rich's contribution to the team is largely by motivating Dee and focusing their attention on discovering the truth about the holes deep under the ocean.

Trivia

The Show

  • Dee makes mention of the first submersible bathysphere made by William Beebee and Otis Barton. However, their first attempt was for a depth of less and 1000 feet and not the 4000+ feet that they will attempt.
