Surface — Season One

Episode 10 is the tenth episode of the first season of Surface, and the tenth episode overall.

Dee and Rich struggle to survive the elements during a massive storm and Miles finds his life in danger from a recent attack.

Plot Overview

Dee and Rich are adrift in the Pacific Ocean during a heavy rain storm. Having cut the tether to the bathysphere to avoid being dragged back down, they have no radio gear and the life raft has a small leak in it. During their time adrift, the are circled by a shark which soon dissappears when several of the large creatures surface nearby. During the night, the liferaft is violently tossed in the air as one of the creatures is protecting a recent batch of eggs which surface around the compromised inflatable raft. Dee and Rich stay surrounded by the eggs, which protects them from attacks by the creatures, and subsist on edible seaweed.

Some one hundred miles away, a coast guard vessel finds Jackson's boat. The boat is heavily damaged and has bloodstains and shell casings on it, suggesting a bloody fight of some kind. There is no sign of Jackson however. A coast guard helicopter approaches Rich and Dee has the life raft has deflated to practically nothing. Crushing several of the eggs to create a bio-luminescent signaling glow, the helicopter spots them and moves in to help. Which hovering nearby, it is nearly bitten when one of the large creatures breaks the surface to attack it. The helicopter retreats for a time then comes in to pick the two of them up. They are able to escape with the video recorded proof of their experiences at the bottom.

Miles returns to school limping from the mauling he got by the pack of creatures. Sweating and weakened, he passes out during class and is taken to the school nurse. While the school nurse tries to convince him to rest, he falls unconscious and has to be rushed to the hospital. His conditions worsen to a life threatening state and Savannah is unable to reach their vacationing parents. In desperation, she tells the doctor that she can get a creature that caused the strange condition he is in. With Phils help, Savannah brings Nim to the hospital but he escapes. Savannah and Dr. Blum find the creature on Miles's bed licking his wounds before it rushes out of the room. Miles flatlines immediately and the hospital team try to revive him. Dr. Blum and a security guard corner Nim and shoot him to death, while Miles miraculously revives and staggers out of the room knowing something happened to Nim. He finds the body and collapses cradling the dead creature. Savannah later observes that the wounds on Miles' legs have completely healed and realizes that Nim had done that.

Notes

• Dr. Blum begins dissecting Nim's corpse, suggesting he will be well informed as to the creature's themselves.
• Miles's dramatic recovery echoes Dr. Singh's similar recovery when his wounds were coated with fluids from a creature.
