Plot Overview
Picard is incapacitated on the bridge by an ancient space probe. Although he is unconscious for only 25 minutes, he experiences a lifetime: being married, having a family, growing old, etc.
During this lifetime, Kayman (Picard's name in that lifetime) discovers that the sun is going to go nova and destroy all life. In the end, the only thing that the people there can do is send a probe with a record of who they were and how they lived into space in search of someone to tell their story. Captain Picard is/will be that person.
After the probe's session has ended, the probe is brought aboard the Enterprise. Investigation shows that it came from a starsystem that was destroyed 1000 years ago. Within the probe was a flute, Picard's only link to that life.
