Spell Binders is a game show piloted for NBC's daytime line-up.

This word game pitted two celebrity/civilian teams. A clue is presented, then the answer is displayed one letter at a time. Whoever rings in tries to identify the word for a point. If incorrect, the opposing counterpart tries to identify the subject on the next letter for the point. The two team members alternate until the word is identified. Game play continues until a team reaches three points and is awarded $50 to the contestant. That team has one member secluded as the on-stage partner gives three responses to a question. The secluded partner is brought back and must identify at least two words using up to five letters. If the teammate has not guessed any word after four letters, the opposing team can challenge the partner to identify it on the fifth letter. Doing so wins $100; the opposing team scores the $100 if the challenge is successful. The money prize doubles in round 2.

First to $500 wins the game and vies for $5000 in the Lucky 7 round. The contestant is secluded as the two celebrity guests are given a subject ("Name a card game"), to which each gives a response. They then solicit a response from each of five members of the studio audience. The contestant returns and in 60 seconds tries to name all seven items with two seconds deducted for each letter that has to be displayed. The contestant earns $100 for each word correctly identified; a successful run wins the $5000 and the five audience members split $500.

Spell Binders piloted in August of 1978. It is believed that Password Plus was greenlit in its stead.
