Plot Overview

Schemer's fortune-telling machine in his arcade correctly predicts bad weather, urging Ginny to take steps to avoid disaster. She therefore protects her tomato crop and sure enough, the weather gets really icy. After hearing of this, Schemer becomes convinced that his machine can actually predict the future. The passengers are stuck at the station as their trains delayed by the frost. Schemer lures them all into the arcade with his fortune telling machine. Ginny asks Schemer for his advice on whether she should get a new haircut. After looking at her currently gray and boring hair, Schemer says "definitely". Later on, Midge is talking to Stacy about Schemer predicting the future. Stacy almost has Midge convinced that Schemer cannot predict the future, when Schemer himself walks into the station, dressed in a mystical turban and robe, addressing himself as the great and powerful El Schemo. This gets Midge to have her fortune told. She interperets this fortune as a command to rip out her poison ivy with her bare hands. Mr. Conductor and the kids come up with a plan to discredit El Schemo, who currently is leading the passengers in chanting "Give Shining Time Station to him-o! Give Shining Time Station to Schemo!" Midge and Ginny storm back into the station. Midge shows El Schemo her rash that she got from ripping out her poison ivy and Ginny then shows everybody her new haircut, which many people shriek in horror at. El Schemo attempts to get an explanation from the machine, but at that point, the head of the doll inside becomes that of Mr. Conductor. The head talks, frightning El Schemo, and says that he told lies to get people's money. By the time he is done, all the passengers are furious at El Schemo. Then their train arrives and they run towards the platform. El Schemo beats them there, begging them to return. Stacy prompts El Schemo to apologize, at which he says "Apologize?! El Schemo?! HAH!" The passengers storm out of the station, now furious. El Schemo hastily apologizes, but he is too late. Schemer loses the El Schemo personality and vows never to do this again, "though it was fun while it lasted.".
