Basic Information

"Delicious Dish" is a fictitious radio show, but it is a parody of the programming typical of the real National Public Radio, or NPR. With their soft, soothing voices and laidback mannerisms, Margaret Jo McCullin and Terry Rialto are send-ups of the cerebral, low-energy radio hosts typical of the national network.

The comedy comes from McCullin and Rialto's tendency—and that of their guests—to say outlandish or unusual things in those same soft, soothing tones. Whether the dialogue is sexually suggestive, depressing or jarringly confessional, McCullin, Rialto, et al. never raise their voices nor react emotionally to the topic of conversation. Some variations of the sketch even implied Rialto was sexually attracted to McCullin, but the sexual tension never moved beyond monotone affirmations.

The most famous versions of the sketch featured Alec Baldwin as guest Pete Schwetty. In the sketch, Schwetty appears on the show to promote his new baked product, his "Schwetty Balls." The sketch was one of the most popular amongst Baldwin's numerous turns as host of Saturday Night Live, and as a result, Pete Schwetty was the only guest to appear twice on "Delicious Dish."

Although Gasteyer created the sketch for herself and Shannon, Shannon left SNL near the end of its twenty-sixth season. Gasteyer, however, remained, and so she reimagined Rialto as Lynn Bershad, portrayed by Dratch. Although Dratch was accustomed to playing low-energy characters (compared to the typically manic Shannon), however, fans of the sketch felt the chemistry wasn't the same as it had been, and so Bershad appeared only once per season in SNL's twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh seasons.
