Sanctuary is a fantasy series originally developed for the Interent. It premiered on May 14, 2007 and had eight 15-minute installments that could be purchased for download forming a complete two-hour story. It was then picked up for television by the Sci Fi Channel and the eight webisodes were reworked, combined and fleshed out into a two hour pilot movie suitable for television. It stars Amanda Tapping, Christopher Heyerdahl, Robin Dunne and Emilie Ullerup. The series is produced by Stage 3 Media, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, founded in 2006. The two hour pilot episode was filmed from January 3 to January 31, 2007 at MGM Bridge Studios. Sanctuary is filmed almost entirely using the green screen technique. All sets seen in Sanctuary are created using CGI technology. The CGI effects for the pilot are all being redone with an increased budget for television
Amanda Tapping plays Dr. Helen Magnus, one of the first female doctors in the Royal College during Victorian England. She is 157 years old, and was at one point engaged to Jack the Ripper. Magnus has a daughter by him, Ashley, who is unaware who her father is. Dr. Magnus has acquired her great longevity working with supernatural creatures collected from all over the world into a sanctuary set up by her father.
The original distribution method for Sanctuary was the internet. Episodes were sold directly to viewers from the series' official website. Each episode, or 'webisode', is about 15-20 minutes long and a new episode was released every two weeks. The first four of the eight-part Pilot will be available for free viewing in low resolution on internet video sites such as YouTube allowing people to try before they buy.
