Plot Overview

To address potential supply problems, Kryten has modified the matter paddle they used on the wax droid planet, so that instead of transporting an object from one place to another; it it now creates three objects from the one matter stream. He calls it a "triplicator"".

Kryten and Lister test it on a strawberry. One of the strawberries is the original, one is succulent and divine, and the other is rotten and awful. When Lister reverses the process, trying to return the strawberry to normal; there are massive, chain reaction explosions. They are just able to escape in Starbug before Red Dwarf blows up.

However in place of the ship there are now two, identical Red Dwarfs side-by-side. Kryten reasons that when Lister reversed the triplicator, he triplicated Red Dwarf. There is a High Red Dwarf and a Low Red Dwarf. During their tests, triplicated objects had a limited lifespan, so they must make haste to get a triplicator from one of the ships.

When they board the High Red Dwarf, everything is clean and fresh. Even the Pot Noodles are divine. The High versions of Rimmer, Lister, and the Cat all wear white robes, and pursue philosophy, poetry, and music for the benefit of mankind.

Kryten finds the triplicator, but some of the parts are missing -- they will have to visit the Low ship to search for the missing parts. High Holly announces that she has received a "weak, but plaintive" distress call, so everyone heads over to the Low ship.

The High Kryten is shot by the (unseen) Lows. Even though he was shot five times, he still believes that it was an accident. It short order we see the crew of the Low Red Dwarf:

  • Low Lister: a demented cowboy.
  • Low Cat: a sabre-toothed Cat creature.
  • Low Kryten: a dirty, manic Kryten.
  • Low Rimmer: a cross-dressing Rimmer wearing furs and stockings with garters. He also has a holo-whip, which he intends to use for obscene purposes.
  • Low Holly: sports a Cleopatra hairstyle.

The Lows capture Lister and use a spinal implant so they can remotely control his actions. Just for fun they use the remote control to make him eat a tarantula. Then they use their Lister-bot to kill the Highs, and finally they go after the originals.

Lister, still able to talk, warns the others and they are able to safely incapacitate him. The original Kryten finishes the triplicator and reverses the effect, reintegrating the two ships into a single, working Red Dwarf.

Behind the Scenes

Allusions and References

Memorable Moments

Lister has been compromised by the Lows -- they are using a spinal implant to control his actions remotely. He has already killed their High counterparts, and now he is trying to kill his shipmates. The only thing that he can still control is his mouth, so he shouts instructions to Kryten such as duck! ... left! ... right! ... etc. He also encourages Kryten to sneak up on him and take him by "surprise".

Quotes

Cat has just made a disparaging remark about High Cat's choice of footwear ...

High Cat: I find clothes a distraction from the pursuit of spiritual and intellectual fulfillment.
Cat: That's weird, because I find spiritual and intellectual fulfillment a distraction from the pursuit of clothes.
