ReGenesis is a drama set in the near future when bioterrorism has become a reality. The series follows the staff of NorBAC (North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission), which was formed to investigate questionable advances in biotechnology, as they deal with biotech related crisises that seem all too real. NorBAC is based in Toronto but the staff travels all over the world to conduct their work.
Unlike most science fiction shows ReGenesis tries to keep the science as realistic as possible and doesn't twist the science to suit the story. They try to make the advancements shown be next logical step from current advancements. The show's science advisors are a much greater part of the production team than on most medical shows (they even get opening title sequence billing) and many of the storylines are built around their ideas. The writers pay extra close attention to the integrity of the terminology in the scripts and the production team makes sure that depictions of scientific processes are as accurate as possible. The Ontario Genomics Institute prepares a fact sheet for each episode describing what is science fact and what is science fiction and how far off that fiction is from reality.
ReGenesis aired in Canada first on The Movie Network and Movie Central, then later on Showcase. As of the start of the Fall 2007 season it also airs in the US in first-run syndication through Program Partners. It is the first complete series to be offered in high definition for first-run weekly syndication in the US.
