Despite dating youthful offender Lincoln Burrows when she was young, Veronica Donovan maintained high grades at school, eventually graduating from Baylor Law School. She later moved back to Chicago to practice real estate law.

Although she had no experience in criminal law, she recently defended her childhood friend Michael Scofield against a charge of armed robbery. After a number of notable incidents relating to her ex-boyfriend, Lincoln's case, Veronica becomes convinced of Lincoln's innocence and works with an attorney specialized in death penalty cases in an attempt to exonerate Lincoln Burrows of first degree murder charges.
