Plot Overview
A wealthy yachtsman's boat blows up shortly after leaving the dock, killing him, and the man's daughter hires Wolfe to prove that her stepmother is the killer. Wolfe has a sentimental reason for taking the case--he was once in love with the girl's grandmother, a famous opera singer. He soon learns that the dead man had no money and was in fact in hock to an Atlantic City casino owner, a man who is in love with the stepmother.
