Plot Overview

A young woman frantically hires Wolfe to get her out of New York and out of the clutches of her mobster father, but as it turns out, the mobster is not her real father--he hired her to pose as his daughter. She's later gunned down in front of Archie, and the next morning, the mobster is also fatally shot. His attorney pays Wolfe a visit and informs the detective of his client's wishes to have Wolfe made guardian of his real daughter. Certain that the killer will next target the real daughter, Wolfe tries to find her and protect her.
